  • Overview

    Position involves preparing for and teaching courses in the department of Art & Design. Some curriculum design may be necessary as well.  Course assignment occurs in a classroom setting.  This course assignment occurs at the Morey Flex Tech High School, located in Shepherd, Michigan and involves primarily teaching face-to-face Fine Arts classes (specifically ceramics) in a dual enrolled and traditional college environment during the winter 2019 semester (beginning January 2019).  One class section is scheduled to run Mondays and Wednesdays from roughly 2:15 PM – 3:40 PM, while additional sections may be offered depending on student demand.  


    This position will remain open until filled. First consideration will be given to applications received by September 21, 2018. The College reserves the right to close the recruitment process once a sufficient applicant pool has been identified.


    1. Teaches assigned classroom courses.
    2. Primary curricular area of responsibility is to maintain, develop, and teach Art and Design courses.
    3. Develops and maintains connections with the graphic design industry, arts community and regional businesses to maintain a relevant curriculum.
    4. Consistently assess learning outcomes and assist in developing strategies for quality improvement.
    5. Develops and updates syllabi for Art & Design courses and ensures course content and requirements meet college and accreditation requirements.
    6. Develops appropriate assessment tools to determine course effectiveness and assures that student outcomes are achieved.
    7. Maintains regular communication with full-time and adjunct faculty in the assigned departments(s), and the Library and Learning Services area, and Registrar and Retention Services.
    8. Works collaboratively with the Full-time Faculty in the discipline area in refining and modifying existing courses.
    9. Evaluates student academic achievement and provides students with timely and meaningful feedback on progress in the course(s).
    10. Maintains and reports appropriate classroom records, such as student attendance and grades.
    11. Holds appropriate office hours for meeting with and assisting students.
    12. Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, and student service initiatives.
    13. Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service programs within the department and college-wide; serves on college committees as encouraged/assigned.
    14. Adheres to the policies, procedures, and compliance guidelines of the college. Ensures support for the Teaching Profession Code of Ethics.
    15. Performs other duties as assigned.


    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Knowledge of course content and ability to develop and effectively deliver course content/objectives and facilitate an effective learning environment for students to maximize their success.
    • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and other industry standard software.
    • Proficient in Mac and Windows operating systems.
    • Demonstrated excellence in communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
    • Knowledge and ability to infuse historical context, typography and iconography in courses.
    • Knowledge of course content in additional visual arts courses preferred.
    • Knowledge of computer and educational technology and ability to effectively integrate technology into the classroom.
    • Ability to plan, organize and manage multiple priorities effectively.
    • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable working in a close, collaborative manner with other faculty, students and administration.

    Education, Certification, Licensure:

    • M.A. or M.F.A. Art, Ceramics, Sculpture, 3-D design or related field preferred.


    • One - three years of teaching experience in Fine Arts courses preferred.
    • Community college teaching experience preferred.

    Working Environment:


    • The job responsibilities of this position are performed in a classroom environment which requires a professional image and demeanor, on-time attendance and reliability. The environment has little, if any discomfort due to heat, cold or dust. There is light noise within the environment.
    • There may be travel to other college locations for meetings.  Travel between campus locations is required.
    • Job duties may be performed in an independent or a team atmosphere.
    • The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (5- 45 pounds).
    • Must meet reasonable and sometimes shifting deadlines, quotas, or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some unpleasant situations.
    • Work scheduled may vary each semester depending on class times/locations.
